Drogheda Ireland

First draft/consult of a trip to Ireland for 2 18 -year olds. Focus is on historical sites and crafts, especially relating to textiles. They will be flying WOW through iceland and meeting up with me during their 19 hour lay away.

Landing at DUB. I am suggesting taking a bus directly from the airport to Drogheda (1 hour) and avoid Dublin. Visiting smaller towns is a lot more pleasant, they are easier to navigate, people are friendlier, and it’s easier to find the historical sites.

Drogheda is one of the oldest towns in Ireland. There will be lots of interesting things to see about town.

The Spoon and Stars has dorm rooms for 20 euros a night.

The plan will be to spend 4 nights in  Drogheda, which is 3 full days.

One day will be to visit about town, adjust to jet lag and being in Ireland.

One day will be to take a 46 minute bus ride to Newgrange. Newgrange is a Stone Age (Neolithic) monument. There are several things to see in the area.

One day will be  a visit to Trim Castle. Trim Castle, the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland, was constructed over a thirty-year period by Hugh de Lacy and his son Walter. Hugh de Lacy was granted the Liberty of Meath by King Henry II in 1172 in an attempt to curb the expansionist policies of Richard de Clare, (Strongbow).  Construction of the massive three storied Keep, the central stronghold of the castle, was begun c. 1176 on the site of an earlier wooden fortress. This massive twenty-sided tower, which is cruciform in shape, was protected by a ditch, curtain wall and moat.

Budget - bus airport - 8 euros, hostel 4 nights 80 euros, bus newgrange 5 euros, newgrange fees 13 euros, bus Trim Castle 10 euros, Trim Castle 5 euros, Total 121 Euros or less than $150 US. This doesn’t include food, drink, entry to other museums or sites in Drogheda.
